As a child, she started playing guitar. When she was eight years old, she realized she was a lesbian. She went on to work as a musician and performed at the Ozark Jubilee, a country music show in Branson. She was the first major country music star who came out as a lesbian. She grew up in a family of four generations of musicians. She toured and co-wrote a song with the country music singer Brad Paisley, "Hard to Be a Husband, Hard to Be a Wife."
